Furnaces do not fail in October. They fail at 2am in January, on the coldest night of the year, usually the weekend a cold snap settles over Kentuckiana.

A large share of New Albany was built in the 1800s and early 1900s, long before central heating was a given. Over the decades those houses have been fitted with furnaces, sometimes more than once, and the furnace we come to fix is often squeezed into a basement or a closet that was never designed to hold one.
The problems we see most often here: furnaces old enough that replacement parts are discontinued, systems sized for the house before an addition went on, ductwork retrofitted into a home that never had any, and returns that were undersized the day they went in.
There is also a safety dimension in older homes that matters more with heating than with cooling. A cracked heat exchanger or a venting problem in an aging furnace is a carbon monoxide risk, not just a comfort one, which is why our diagnostics on a no-heat call always include the safety checks, not only the fault that brought us out.
A furnace that will not produce heat has a long list of possible causes: a failed igniter, a bad flame sensor, a tripped limit switch, a thermostat fault, or no gas or power reaching the unit. We test it properly, find the actual cause, and price it before we start.
On modern furnaces these two parts cause more no-heat calls than anything else. A dirty flame sensor or a cracked hot-surface igniter is a common, affordable fix, and one of the first things we check.
A furnace that runs but will not push warm air, or a blower that never shuts off, usually points to the motor, the control board, or a fan limit switch. We find which and fix it.
A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide into your home. This is the one furnace fault we never treat casually. If we find a crack, we will show you and explain your options plainly, without pressure.
Older systems with standing pilots and newer electronic ignition both have their own failure modes. We work on both, along with gas valves and the safety controls around them.
A furnace that dies in a hard freeze is not an inconvenience. For someone elderly, someone with a health condition, or a house with a baby in it, a cold house overnight is a safety problem, and frozen pipes are an expensive one.

If you smell rotten eggs or gas, or a CO detector is sounding, get everyone out of the house first, then call the gas company and us from outside. Do not wait to troubleshoot it yourself.
A no-heat call in January is the easiest moment in this trade to sell someone a furnace they did not need. We are not a franchise, and we are not going to do that. If a repair gets you through the winter, we will tell you.
